An empty wine jug rolls
on the shoulder of the road
by all the squashed dragonflies
so metallic when their luster
catches light.
You can find good dreams
even when sleeping
on the sidewalk
in a rainstorm,
ignore the warnings
about everything
kick around
the broken glass
and find the diamonds.
Tree limbs overhang
the path and I havenโt seen
a snake in twenty years.
Maybe a photograph
every now and then
but the real thing
never finds me
on these dirt trails
where they always
used to slide.
This girl sits in the mulch
outside the multiplex
and untangles her hair,
and the birds donโt flee
they hang around
and peck the ground
shitting everywhere.
