Lost possessions seek
light and repair
from dusted corners
where spiders tread on
broken glass and chains.
Figures drink
and let the empties fall
into the river
and rush away
with lost lures
that never get
their hooks in anything.
A generation keeps
its room dark
with nothing
but light reaching
out to them.
The old player
hits the keys
on the piano
in the manner
of his teacher.
A deer skull dries
in a gap between
the branches
where the sun beams
make it through.
Our worst night
goes nowhere
and everyone walks
the wet streets
home alone,
but our best day
somehow nullifies
the scarcity.
We make do
with the dead leaves
and the tearing sky
and tilt the whole horizon
on its side.
