Runway

A pilot watched the flight attendants
dance through the window in the door.
They tried to keep their spirits up
when the flights were long and there
were few stops in between.

Their trip would now be ending soon,
the vertical lights marked the long dark
road that was made for them.
He aimed the plane right for it,
and held on.

The clouds fell apart around them
as the decent began its course,
and the stars were blurry figments
at the edges of the windshield.
It almost felt like going back
in time.

The landing gear gently kissed
the ground and the weight of the craft
followed after. The passengers couldn’t
own up to their fear, but from the runway
you could hear nervous laughter.
