Dog Days

Daylight like a distant fight,
but the blows ring out as clear
as candy winter. Blue sugar
like a snowflake on a stick
for them to hold against their
tongues to keep from talking.
The concept of fake snow
doesn’t register when I mention
it to them. They stop running
their handsaws on the tree branches
and turn to me with a look like
I just pushed them in the pool.
There is no kind of tool for taking
what was said and making it forgotten.
You are the sentences seeping out
a running nose of educated guesses
that cannot be wiped.
Look around you at what we choose
to cast in stone as opposed to all
the metal that will surely rust away.
There isn’t any school today,
so stay home and watch T.V.
just like a dog.
