Count

She fell asleep before the end of the movie.
They got calls about the black spot
branching out from the space underneath
their air conditioner.
They got a letter about how things were going
in the part of the state where everything was
wrapped up in mist from the woods.
That’s where the leaves in the wind start to
say what they mean, and the mantises
grow into themselves.
She counts the storms on the chalkboard
her dad keeps in the basement by the
ping pong table, and bites her nails out
of worry that the rain will fill up everything.
Sort of like the sun does to the sky.
