Just Okay

Uncontrollable sleep holds you in place
like it has all its weight pressing down
against your shoulders. You’ve taken
to the tradition of turning over all the
rocks you see in your dreams to
find out if your subconscious has been
leaving you Easter eggs, and
the more you look the more that
end up existing in total.
In the mornings you call her on your
aging phone that can barely dial and
you talk for a while about all the twists
and turns you walk in your heads.
You are both off your meds and you’ve
never felt more than just okay in your life.
Don’t give up on thinking all together, but
remember to take short intermittent breaks
and play practical jokes that require pretending
to be someone you’re not after knocking on other people’s
doors.
