Out Of Here

The take out
in its lantern like
box cools down too fast
and tastes wrong,
but we eat it.

She kills flies
one after the other
with a red swatter
crushing them
against the yellow wall.

A car drives into a hydrant
flooding the yard
and street and the sounds
outside become sirens
wailing in the sun.

A baseball cracks
off a wooden bat
and careens off
to the outfield
where it is caught
by some young girl
playing in sandals.

When the game ends
all the friends
promise they will meet sometime
again before the summer ends,
and the dry twigs burn
and snap somewhere on
the hillside moving closer
as the night does
to the day.
