The Witness

They drilled a hubcap
into the bent streetlight,
as a marker, like it all
wasn’t so obvious.
The crash came at the collapse
of two completely different
intersecting daydreams.
The radios were both
aftermarket and playing
the same station,
and somehow in the aftermath
they couldn’t get the power off.
The echoed traffic update played
across both twisted bodies
that could only be the commentary
for what happened in the hour
leading up to it.
They asked the nine year old
who witnessed it
if the impact
and the dying men
we’re frightening,
and his distant
stare refocused as he told them
it was almost like a miracle
that things could be exciting,
in this neighborhood
where nothing ever happened.
