Lanes

She thought the music was too happy there
playing in the mall while all the families
took up space in all the lines.
I couldn’t convince her things had always been
difficult like this just in the ways
that add up more and more severe.
We sat together on the marble rim
surrounding water and the change,
we all tossed in to make our wishes go away.
Now we are driving in some crappy car
I cannot control beyond my efforts
just to keep it on the road.
We replace it in our stupid dreams
where we can make it rain on anything,
and there is nothing left
to leave out of the ride.
Telephone poles are keeping everything
flickering with their shadows cast
across us as we go.
She holds her hand against
the window glass watching every city pass
and tells me it is getting way too cold.
