Empty Screens

The concrete floors of alleys
have puddles in the shapes
of slanted chasms deep enough
to stop you in your tracks.
The passing trains screamed
over the town, and all around
their precious cargo carried
messages from cities in the South.
She pierced holes around her mouth
and in them placed her jewels as black
as empty screens.
She found herself in many scenes
as the person standing out for once,
but never was expected just to be there.
She never learned to cut her hair,
and by following her instincts
she ended up with something
new, but worth the effort.
Feeling like a silhouette
against an ending day
she made her way to where
she spent the night
and stared out all the windows
until the world was finally dark,
and out of sight.
