End Of A Lease

They have to leave,
but that’s easy when
you don’t have any friends.
Stacking cardboard full
picture frames and albums
full of pictures. It’s not real
if you can’t see it with your eyes.
All the signs that this was
ending were ignored with
nights pretending things
were normal.
The T.V. activates to static
and never gets clearer.
She sorts her dresses
by color and when she
finishes moves on
to all her underwear.

and just crams all his
into one box marked clothes.
They both wonder as they drive
away if the new tenets
will smell the residue of smoke
or notice all the scratches
on the walls.
