Background Noise

A crowd is arguing
about a standard political
miscommunication,
and the t-shirts on both sides
reflect the history of the war
they are currently fighting.
Some contain platitudes
about life written
in plain white text on black
fabric, and others minimalist
portraits of leaders who
were killed by someone
that didn’t care much
either way.

There has got to be
a better use for the day.
Like a long conversation
when you’re stuck somewhere
and you ask someone a question
or they ask you.
When it turns out you have more
to say than you realize
and the words you find
can only be the right ones.
A guitar player looks for a place
to stand on the sidewalk,
and when people start
to pass, she doesn’t let
the aimless background
noise defeat her.
