Gaps

Behind the heavy gray clouds
is a burning sun, but
its light still finds its way through
all the gaps.
I stand in the parking lot
full of potholes and broken bottles,
and stare into the rays
sporadically fighting their way
down to us.
There is so much more dark
in the sky today.
The kind that makes you want
to stay asleep.
I am awake though, an observer
of what we all know, deep down,
has been happening forever.
It starts to rain, and the rain is cold.
The kind of rain that’s frozen
until it melts on your skin.
I feel it melt into mine,
but that’s just fine.
I don’t need to stand in the light
to know it’s got the whole world
up its sleeve.
The rain will stop and the clouds
will leave.
