Drowsy

She overslept and missed
her one chance at the train.
The glass of water on her
windowsill, bent the morning
light in every color.

Her clothes hung out
of half closed drawers
in a dresser handed down
from her mother.
After she stood in the shower
with her eyes closed
she got a sense of what
she wanted from the world.

She sloshed mouthwash
through her teeth with her hand
wrapped around the cold
rusted banister, attached
to the staircase, leading
down from her floor
to the parking lot.

She made a vow to herself
to give it everything.
And in between the other
tired people trying to
unlock their cars.
She knew the bars
that didn’t care
if you were early.
