Awake

Corrupted intuition echos off the earth
like the last clap in an apprehensive
applause. There’s a rock that looks
extremely close to a perfect sphere,
resting at the edge of a cliff, and everyone
loves it because they’re told to.
Strict rules are enforced without
any explanation of the reasoning, and
on Thursdays they watch videos
about one side of the past.
There was a fight in the hallway and one
of the kids had a cast on his arm.
This was useful because he could use it
as a club, and he did, undoing all the healing
underneath it.
When it was over he just sat there
in the blood from both their noses and
thought quietly about what kept them all
awake.
