Cheap plastic lights line the walk way
from the driveway to the front door.
The light above the porch was
foggy from the swarm that gathered around it.
It was mostly just mosquitoes and some moths.
Static fields bend trees like kids with wads
of clay, and drain the day of any light it
carried with it.
They all remind each other that the party
is tonight and so they take a moment to
prepare themselves in their rooms.
They drove out past the cactus patch that
the city maintained at the line between
this place and the next. The coyotes were
silhouettes out their windows. Parking
was easier around the corner, and when
they made it, there was nothing
there at all.
